New data: 4,400+ young workers seriously injured each year |
Data delivered by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has revealed 15 to 24-year-olds as the most vulnerable workers in the state.
The age range represents over 16 per cent of Queensland’s workforce and more than 4,400 reports of serious injuries each year. Serious injuries are often life-altering and sometimes fatal. They are always devastating, and the aftermath has a huge impact on the young workers who survive them, as well as the loved ones who are left behind when they don’t survive. Across the country, since 2012, the age group has suffered more than 191 workplace deaths and the highest number of injury claims in a decade. Across Queensland, we lost 45 young people. These statistics are a startling reminder of why it’s critical for business owners, colleagues, young workers, and their communities to understand the unique risk profiles of young workers and how to manage health and safety risks.
Young workers in this profile are often transitioning from school or study into work. They are keen to do a good job to impress their boss, so often feel pressured to do whatever tasks are asked of them - but they might avoid asking questions or raising concerns, particularly about safety. Resources to Support the Safety of Young Workers are available:
The Young worker safety toolkit (PDF, 4.59 MB) helps employers of young workers, education and training providers, youth service providers and parents and caregivers engage with young people about work health and safety. It encourages actions that build the capabilities of young workers to be safe and productive at work, rather than just relying on them to speak up or ask the right questions.
The toolkit includes a range of resources such as films, presentation templates and checklists that are based on an understanding of how young people learn and communicate with others. Download the Young worker safety toolkit (PDF, 4.59 MB)

Extracted from the latest WorkCover Update - December 2023 Staying on top of fatigue this festive season
It's no coincidence that workplace injuries tend to spike in the lead-up to the end of the year.
With the year's finish line in sight, we're often more stressed and fatigued than usual, and rushing to get things finished at work before Christmas and the New Year.
However, nothing's worth not coming home safe from work for. It's important to be aware of hazards like fatigue, and take steps to manage them and prevent injuries at work. Read more Webinar: Work social events and liability
As we approach the festive season, it’s a time to celebrate the year that was with our colleagues at end-of-year parties. But what happens if someone is injured at one of these parties? Could the employer be held liable?
In our latest webinar, guest presenters Kym Cavanagh and Jim Tealby, of Hede Byrne & Hall, take a look at the case law involving injuries that have occurred during work social functions, and analyse when employers may be held liable for those injuries. Watch here |
