Rail Bridge Strikes - Toolbox Talk |
Queensland Rail is promoting their Size Matter’s. Know your trucking height campaign to remind motorists of the risk of bridge strikes as the holiday season fast approaches.
Bridge strikes are not only dangerous for the driver and other road users, they can cause lengthy delays for rail customers and motorists. They can result in significant fines for the driver of the vehicle and damage to your vehicle. Drivers may experience other costs as a result of delay or damage to the vehicle’s load. If the rail infrastructure has been damaged, Queensland Rail may seek recovery of the costs of repairing that infrastructure.
Queensland Rail are committed to reducing the likelihood and impact of bridge strikes through signage, engineering and technology solutions. However, it is the responsibility of drivers to know the height of their vehicle and load, and to plan their journey. To assist with this, Queensland Rail has created a Toolbox Talk which is attached to this email. The Toolbox Talk is designed to provide Team Leaders/Managers and Facilitators with the required resources and information to conduct a Toolbox safety talk about low rail bridge strikes to a group of employees within an organisation.
On Queensland Rail's website qr.com.au/sizematters, there is additional information and campaign videos that can be shared with drivers to help reduce collisions with low clearance rail bridges. A list of low clearance rail bridges is available here https://www.queenslandrail.com.au/Customers/Pages/Low-clearance-rail-bridges.aspx

Three pivotal reports identifying Australia’s current, emerging and future skills needs, and how the national skills system is meeting these needs, have been released by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA). JSA’s first capacity study – The Clean Energy Generation: workforce needs for a net zero economy, has been released. The report provides important analysis to support Australia’s transformation to net zero.
The latest Skills Priority List shows that 36% of the occupations assessed are in shortage. Some of the Transport and Logistics roles that have been assessed as experiencing shortages in Queensland include Truck Driver, Diesel Mechanic, Tanker Driver, Bus Driver, Train Driver, Railway Track Worker, Railway Signal Operator, Train Controller, Deck Hand, Aircraft Baggage Handler and Airline Ground Crew, Flying Instructor, Ship’s Engineer and Ship’s Master.
Bringing it all together, the Jobs and Skills Report, Towards a national jobs and skills roadmap provides an initial assessment of current and future skills needs and opportunities for the national skills system. The 2023 Annual Jobs and Skills Report states that over the next 10 years, more than 9 out of 10 jobs expected to be created, will require post-secondary qualifications and of these, around 44% will have VET as the primary pathway. |

Captain Cook Highway, Cairns CBD to Smithfield Upgrade |
|
|
Information from Department of Transport and Main Roads, Far North District, North Queensland Region The Department of Transport and Main Roads has recently completed construction of a third inbound lane on the section of Captain Cook Highway, locally known as Sheridan Street, between Airport Avenue and James Street.
As part of the works ‘Trucks Prohibited’ signage has been installed for the new third lane just south of Airport Avenue until just north of Lily Street. This restriction is solely associated with the steep crossfalls in the left lane and the proximity of roadside hazards (namely the power poles, which are particularly close to the kerb). The risk being that the combination of steep crossfalls and close proximity of power poles increases the risk of larger vehicles striking the poles or other hazards.

Update on Machine Learning Cameras, NSW |
Article from Transport for NSW (TfNSW) Transport for NSW is installing a number of machine learning traffic counting and classifying cameras across the state.
Images of heavy vehicles are taken by the cameras, which then classify the type of vehicle in transit and the type of cargo being transported.
This heavy vehicle traffic information is helping Transport for NSW shape the future of freight, to better understand freight movements, improve road safety, and enable more efficient deliveries.
The cameras are not used for enforcement or monitoring people or private vehicles. People can expect to see cameras installed at the following locations over the coming weeks: - Harley Ave, Mount Victoria
- Darling Causeway, Mount Victoria
- Great Western Hwy, Little Hartley
-
Castlereagh Level Crossing, Dunedoo.
For more information, please visit the Machine Learning cameras webpage which includes a factsheet with details about what these units are and what they do. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact our project team at freight@transport.nsw.gov.au. |
