The Albanese Federal Government is setting out to impose a fuel efficiency standard on new cars and encourage electric vehicle uptake in an attempt to cut 3m tonnes of carbon emissions by 2030. Although this is not truck related, the release of the government's Electric Vehicle Policy this week indicates the strengthening position the government is taking on reducing emissions. I encourage you to keep pace with the developments in the EV space with a view to the future transition to low emissions heavy vehicles.
With the release of the government’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy this week, Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy said car manufacturers were incentivised to sell high polluting vehicles into Australia because of the lack of fuel efficiency standards. Minister Bowen said that with fuel efficiency standards being determined, it would require more affordable electric vehicles to be sent to the Australian market.
However, the Transport Minister, Catherine King, acknowledged that while the fuel efficiency standards would be mandatory for new cars, the strategy released on Wednesday did not include details on when they would come into operation. The consultation will run for six weeks, and Minister King said she hoped to have an exposure draft for updated legislation, and potentially introduce the bill to parliament, by the end of the year. Minister King said a fuel efficiency standard would “send a strong message to the global car industry that when it comes to transport technology, Australia will no longer settle for less”.
The fuel efficiency standard is yet to be designed in consultation with industry, but the government point to studies that suggest a standard on how much carbon dioxide cars can emit could save motorists $519 a year in fuel costs. It will pay to be aware of the references to potential savings for car users', as in time, the government focus conversation will point towards the trucking industry.
At this stage, the consultation is focussed on passenger cars so for any fleets with passenger cars, use the following links/video which provide useful background. It may also be of interest if you wish to make a submission to the EV strategy consultation. The below information is not a heavy duty read so worthwhile just having a brief look.
Submissions close 31 May 2023. Info video released by govt: https://lnkd.in/gagrS7Yy National EV Strategy: https://lnkd.in/gpW3W4d6
FES Discussion Paper: https://lnkd.in/gefHRs3H
For many, the conversion to low emissions heavy vehicles is not yet on the radar, particularly given the lack of government incentive support, however, as always, we endeavour to highlight relevant issues that will impact your business operations and decisions in the future.
As always, my phone is on for a conversation, so don’t hesitate to connect with me. Safe travels Gary

Growing interest in Hydrogen Engines
|
| |
|
Article from Cummins website
Hydrogen and hydrogen engines have been receiving a lot of attention in business circles, in the media, and in government. With good reason—the need to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and reach destination zero is greater than ever. And hydrogen fuel is one of the most promising carriers of non-fossil energy.
In the electricity sector, power-to-hydrogen and hydrogen-to power-technologies such as hydrogen combustion turbines are rapidly developing. In the transportation sector, initial attention was focused on fuel cell hydrogen electric vehicles, or FCEVs. More recently, hydrogen vehicles powered by internal combustion engines are also receiving increased attention, especially among medium and heavy-duty trucking applications. Hydrogen engines can enable your journey to destination zero using carbon-free hydrogen fuel as FCEVs, and use technology familiar to vehicle manufacturers, fleets and drivers. Read more |

Message from Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has received an increase in notifications about employers not meeting super guarantee (SG) obligations.
If employers fail to meet their SG obligations, pay late, don’t pay in full or allocate to the wrong super fund, the ATO can be notified by employees. The ATO reviews every employee notification (EN) received and will pursue any outstanding amounts.
Once the ATO receives an EN about incorrect or missed contributions, they may notify other employees and can take firmer actions including the commencement of legal proceedings to recover amounts owed.
To meet SG obligations, avoid additional costs, penalties, and the need for employees to contact the ATO: - pay employees their SG in full and on time by the quarterly due date
- pay the correct super rate of 10.5%, which will increase to 11% on 1 July 2023
- pay to your employees’ nominated funds.
If a discrepancy is discovered and employers are unable to pay in full, the ATO will work with them to establish a payment plan. If businesses need assistance, have made a late payment or missed a payment, they can contact the ATO to find a solution. For more information, visit the ATO’s website at ato.gov.au/superforemployers
