VIVA Energy - New Energies Service Station Project

A clean energy future for Australia’s road transport industry

Viva Energy has partnered with its customers to demonstrate the important role that hydrogen can play in decarbonising hard-to-transition industries such as commercial road transport.

VIVA Energy's project brings together a diverse fleet of hydrogen vehicles, demonstrating their application in every day operations such as road freight, public transport, municipal waste management, water treatment and general fleet. Hydrogen, generated from renewable energy and recycled water, will reduce the carbon footprint of these heavy vehicles that Australians rely on every day.

The project received a $34 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) as part of ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program and the Victorian Government also contributed $1 million to the project via the Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund.

Project overview

Viva Energy is proposing to construct and operate Australia’s first publicly accessible service station of commercial scale. It will offer hydrogen refuelling and electric vehicle recharging for heavy transport vehicles powered by renewable energy.

In an Australian first, the New Energies Service Station will have the capability to dispense renewable hydrogen in commercial quantities and refuel a fleet of heavy hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. The project will place Victoria at the forefront of Australia’s ambitions for hydrogen as a zero emission solution for the commercial road transport sector.

The New Energies Service Station is Australia’s most ambitious renewable hydrogen mobility project. The site is expected to commence operations in late in 2024 in Geelong.
