As many of you would know, the Prime Minister and Treasurer are convening a Jobs and Skills Summit on 1-2 September 2022, which will bring together employers, civil society, unions and government to address shared economic challenges. The themes and outcomes of the Summit will inform the Employment White Paper. This will help to shape the future of Australia’s labour market.
In the lead up to the Jobs and Skills Summit, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Regional Development and Local Government Hon. Catherine King MP is hosting a pre-summit roundtable on jobs and skills next week in Sydney to which I am pleased to be invited and representing the QTA.
This is an excellent opportunity for the QTA perspective to be included in the Federal government response to the ever increasing labour shortages in the road freight industry to meet the supply chain demands now and into the future. The economy relies on the confidence of investors, operators, manufacturers, agriculture and many other to attract, develop, train and retain heavy vehicle drivers in particular who are essential to the road freight task. This pre-Summit roundtable initiative of Minister King is critical to the future viability of the road freight industry, and we both welcome the initiative by the Albanese Government and stand well prepared to advocate for our members on vital decisions that need to be made to ensure the future security of the supply chain and viability of our communities. Stay safe and healthy Gary |

Stand Back. Look Up. - Rail Safety |
|
|
Working together on rail safety is very important. Over the last six years there has been on average 83 fatalities on the Australian rail network, with 71 of these people taking their own life. As well, annually there are almost as many attempted suicides as suicides, around 27 injuries at level crossings or because of trespass and around 1,880 level crossing and trespass near hits.
Rail Safety Week is an annual community awareness week held in Australia & New Zealand, designed to engage the community in safe rail practices. During Rail Safety Week, rail operators, police, government & community organisations unite by organising activities such as media events, safety demonstrations, webinars & virtual events, along with engaging schools & community groups to raise awareness of the importance of rail safety. A recent review of current over dimensional vehicle permits that require QPS escorts identified a number of road infrastructure projects where bridge girders of similar dimensions are being transported on a frequent basis.
