The announcement this week of an increase to the fuel excise of 0.9cpl will take the duty to 23cpl until the reduction ends on 28/9/22 at 11.59pm. With no clear decision yet on whether the fuel excise will be reinstated at the end of September, uncertainty for fleets continues each time a truck is filled with diesel. While the 22.1cpl fuel excise reduction is in place, heavy vehicles remain ineligible to claim back the fuel tax credits. The slim profit margins in the road freight industry continue to erode away with the fluctuating high prices of diesel causing operating costs to increase.
A more substantial financial impact to consider is the increase to the level of the Road User Charge (RUC) being considered by Ministers in the near future. This potential increase is likely to be of some significance. Assuming the fuel excise is reinstated on 29 September, the fuel tax credit (FTC) would return. However, the FTC will be reduced by whatever the increase is to the RUC. This means that the index of 0.9cpl will be applied to the fuel excise BUT the increase to the RUC will mean a reduction to the original level of the FTC which was previously 17.8cpl. We will continue to strongly advocate on your behalf on this important issue. We will keep you advised as soon as the government decision is made on the RUC.
As I communicated some months ago when the discount on the fuel excise was announced, it is imperative that you undertake frequent reviews of your fuel costs and adjust your fuel levy accordingly in your contracts. Open and clear communication with your customers is vital so they understand how these costs are impacting delivery costs. If you are experiencing issues in your business implementing or adjusting your fuel levy, it is recommended to speak with a specialised transport accountant or a solicitor who looks after contracts to obtain formal advice.
Stay safe and healthy Gary |

Great crowd at the NQ Women in Tranpsort Breakast |
We had a great crowd join us for our 6th Women in Transport Breakfast in Townsville this week. It was great to see everyone face to face and share a morning hearing from two inspiring women working in the transport and logistics industry. Our NQ Membership Officer, Frances Schafer hosted the morning as the MC and did a fantastic job. Also joining her were Ebony Harber and Ezra Pyers who also did a great job to ensure the morning ran smoothly. Annastasia Denigan (QUBE) featured as our first guest speaker and shared her career reflections and thoughts on how the sterotypical language in the workplace can be adapted to be more inclusive to reflect the diversity that makes up the industry.
Our second speaker was Captain Jennifer Tumbers who is currently the Executive Director for Maritime Services Qld (TMR). Following an extensive seagoing career working for various Australian Shipping Companies and obtaining her Masters Qualifications, Jennifer 'came ashore' to start a family and then returned to the seagoing industry following a regulatory pathway. |

Inflation's impact on the Global Supply Chain - NTI |
Across the global economy inflation is rising and central banks are increasing interest rates in response. Higher interest rates increase the cost of borrowing money and curb spending and investment, which helps reduce inflation.
There’s no doubt that low interest rates and the ‘cheap money’ they enabled have for many years helped keep inflation low and created many business opportunities. But now, rates are heading upwards and are likely to do so for some time.
What might these increases mean for your business, your customers and your insurance? Read more |

| 4 reasons driver coaching is for everyone (even fantastic drivers) - Teletrac Navman |
When it comes to life skills, we’re always learning. Whether it’s working out your finances, nailing home cooking, or being able to put together an Ikea flat-pack without tearing your hair out, the learning curves are constant. The same is true of our driving skills. While taking classes, reading, or listening to tips from others to improve is considered normal for the rest of our everyday skills, once we’ve graduated from our L-plates, the learning generally stops.
Considering 64 per cent of Australian drivers were involved in at least one car collision in 2021, it’s safe to say our driving habits aren’t always up to scratch, and we’ve got more to contend with on the road than just changing gears or stopping at lights. We all pick up bad habits through taking shortcuts or learnt from others we passenger with. So, like our other life skills, we should consistently improve our driving skills through ongoing driver coaching, education, and training.
