This week we celebrated women in transport and logistics at our 11th Annual IWD Breakfast Event. Normally held in March, we moved the event to mid-year due to COVID, however, it seems COVID can't be escaped! On behalf of the QTA Board, I would like to thank our dedicated staff who bring this event together each year, including Lisa who is currently working away behind the scene from hospital. The level of detail that goes into the planning of the event makes our guest experience memorable. I'd like thank everyone that attended, our Event Sponsors and all businesses who donated to the raffle. We were pleased to raise of $5500 for Serving our People who were our Charity of Choice this year. A full report of the event can be read in the article below.
With wild weather warnings around, please take extra care on the roads and reinforce the importance of remaining patient on the roads and to drive to conditions.
I will be holding a Member Exclusive Mid Year Update on Friday 29 July, please register to join me between 11am-12noon. All the details can be found below. Stay safe, warm and healthy Gary |

Proposed introduction of Independent Courier minimum rates, collective bargaining |
On 22 July 2022, the QTA attended the Education, Employment and Training Committee’s public hearing into the Industrial Relations and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2022 (‘the Bill’) in support of earlier submissions. The Bill, if successful, empowers the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) to make orders setting minimum conditions for independent courier drivers via amendments that are modelled on chapter 6 of the NSW Industrial Relations Act and permit contract determinations and negotiated agreements covering drivers, principal contractors and relevant registered organisations.
In our submission, the QTA opposed the proposed changes on the basis that changes to state-based legislation is not a suitable way to address nation-wide issues of road safety and insecure work among gig workers. Similarly, where the new Federal Government has already taken their first steps to change legislation in these areas it is clear that in time, should those changes come to pass, only traditional forms of road freight will be effected by state legislation. Where the road freight industry has not expressed the need for such legislation, nor has NSW Model been found as particularly effective in addressing road safety, we advanced our concerns that it was be irresponsible for state government to proceed with changes. Member concerns about how compliance with the legislation would be managed to ensure an even playing field were also raised in both the written and oral submission.
QTA’s written submission, and the submission of the other interested parties, can be located here The commitment will release their report on Friday 12 August 2022. |

2022 IWD Breakfast Event one of the best |
|
|
It was a packed house this week at the QTA's 11th International Women's Day Event in Brisbane! Featuring a cracking line up of speakers, the morning was full of fun and connection amongst the 230+guests.
The morning started with MC Linda MacDonald (business2one) joining the stage to welcome Hon. Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads for the Acknowledgement of Country. Principal Event Sponsor representative Simon McCallum (Queensland Account Manager) then addressed the audience for the Official Welcome. Simon shared some startling statistics around the disparity in super balances between males and female and the importance of making superannuation a priority in your life financial planning.
