With the date for changes to Queensland's 'open' border approaching on 17 December, we are expecting a new Freight Protocol to be issued in the coming week to allow industry time to be prepared for any changes during this peak season for freight deliveries around the country.
As we have been in the past 18 months, we have been in close consultation with Queensland Health and TMR to voice the need for a fair and reasonable approach for our essential transport and logistics workers. We have strongly expressed our view to have testing requirements removed for those drivers who have obtained full vaccination status.
The road freight industry has undergone more mandatory COVID testing than any other sector in the country, and considering the volume of truck movements around the country, have done an outstanding job to keep the community safe by adhering to these strict entry requirements.
We understand since the requirement from 15 November for drivers to be fully vaccinated to enter Queensland, there has been almost full compliance and this effort should be rewarded by removing asymptomatic testing requirements for those drivers performing this essential task in our community.
We will update you as soon as we have advice on the new Freight Protocol.
During the next months, the demands on many sectors of the freight industry is extraordinarily high and these demands place extra pressure on the operations, compliance and drivers to ensure that freight keeps moving and is delivered in safe timeframes. Getting some relief from mandatory testing requirements would be welcomed and allow drivers to focus on the the freight task at hand.
With State borders opening up, the increase of car passenger transport travelling for the holiday season will be evident on our roads and it is important to remember that many of these people will have not driven long distances for several months. I urge to you reinforce all your safety protocols and increase communication with your compliance staff and drivers to be extra vigilant during this time.
Stay safe and healthy
