Road Conditions: Pacific Motorway (M1) - Watland Street to Sports Drive Upgrade
Major construction continues on the Watland Street to Sports Drive Upgrade, as part of Stage 2 – Pacific Motorway (M1): Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill Upgrade.
The next six months of construction will continue to advance numerous work fronts, building on the extensive M1 northbound bridge construction at Springwood and Logan roads, the V1 Veloway bridge works over the M1 on-ramp at Lexington Road and the road widening and exit ramp realignment at Rochedale Road.
What comes next?
Over the next six months, the major scheduled program of works will include:
M1 Southbound / South East Busway
Excavation works for the South East Busway underpass at the Rochedale Road (M1 Exit 19) will start next month, after crews successfully realigned the off-ramp in mid-September 2022.
Construction will continue along the entire busway corridor to include earthworks, bridge works, retaining walls, and the realignment of small sections of noise barriers adjacent the M1.
Traffic will be switched onto newly constructed M1 southbound lanes between Underwood and Springwood roads, to make way for ongoing busway construction.
The Fitzgerald Avenue M1 off-ramp (Exit 20) will be permanently closed to general traffic in late November 2022, so that work can start to convert the exit to a dedicated busway ramp to Springwood station.
When completed, the busway extension will connect Springwood and Rochedale bus stations with the existing bus corridor into Brisbane; providing commuters with the benefit of faster travel times, greater travel time reliability and more opportunity to leave their vehicles at home.
Rochedale Road
Crews will start working on the new footpath and road pavement alignment on the western side of Rochedale Road from early 2023, having largely completed all works to the east in October 2022.
Springwood Road
Construction of a new four-lane southbound bridge over Springwood Road will start in December 2022 and continue through to late 2023. Works will involve bridge piling for installation of bridge piers, drainage works on Springwood and Rochedale roads, and lifting large pre-constructed concrete deck units into place.
M1 Northbound
M1 northbound traffic will be switched onto a newly constructed bridge over Logan Road in mid to late December 2022, after the first stage of current motorway bridge construction finishes.
In early 2023, crews will then start to remove the former northbound M1 bridge.
Motorists will be detoured away from Logan Road while the bridge is being removed at night, at times when traffic volumes are at their lowest.
Other major work fronts in the area include retaining wall construction on the Pacific Highway western service road. The retaining walls are being built in preparation of the new, wider northbound M1 corridor alignment between the Watland Street overpass and Logan Road.
V1 Veloway
Major structural works on the V1 Veloway extension continue south of the current end point at Maureen Street (Camelot Park), Underwood. Works involve a three-span bridge over Logan Road and ongoing construction of the Veloway bridge over the M1 on-ramp at Lexington Road.
What to expect during the works
During these works you may experience construction impacts such as increased noise, dust, and vibration, including from:
- heavy plant including excavators with demolition hammers, piling rigs, profilers, rollers, trucks and cranes.
- construction equipment and hand tools.
- vehicles and equipment with flashing lights and reversing beepers for the safety of onsite workers.
- truck movements to deliver equipment and materials to and from site.
- temporary lane closures and traffic control, as required.
Where possible, measures will be implemented to minimise these impacts.
Standard construction hours
Day time: 7am to 5pm (Mon to Sat)
Night-time: 7pm to 5am (Sun to Thu)
Please note that some works may be required to be undertaken outside of standard hours.
To minimise traffic disruption and for the safety of motorists and workers, some works will happen at night when traffic volumes are at their lowest.
We appreciate your patience while we carry out these important works and ask that you drive carefully and follow traffic signs.
* Weather, site and contractor conditions can impact works, delaying start and finish schedules.
