Barron River bridge (Kuranda) - investigations are continuing

Investigations on the Barron River bridge at Kuranda are continuing.

Inspections on the Barron River bridge at Kuranda in May 2024 identified an issue with some Macalloy bars. The Macalloy post-tensioning bars were retrofitted to provide additional strength after the bridge opened to traffic in 1963.

The investigations so far have shown that the bridge is safe for single-lane traffic up to 42.5 tonne and that some Macalloy bars will need replacing. TMR is investigating suitable methods for the replacement.

From Monday 19 August until Friday 30 August 2024 short intermittent full closures of the bridge of up to 10 minutes will be required between 9am and 3pm for repair works.

It is expected the Macalloy bars investigations will be completed in late September 2024. TMR will advise you what the outcome of the investigations will mean for the traffic arrangements on the bridge.

The planning study for a long-term solution for the Barron River bridge is progressing as quickly as possible and expected to be completed in late 2024.

Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) 2024-25 to 2027-28 includes $15 million towards preconstruction including a reference design.
