NQ & FNQ Road Works Updates (Ayr-Tsv, Innisfail, Laura)
Bruce Highway (Ayr-Townsville) lane closure and with restrictions at Mackenzie Creek
Lane closures and other traffic impacts will be in effect on the Bruce Highway at Mackenzie Creek (approx. 24 kilometres south of Townsville) while repairs are completed on the bridge. Motorists can expect minor delays to travel between Ayr and Townsville, of approximately five minutes.
This section of the Bruce Highway is also subject to a temporary width restriction, with vehicles over 3.5 metres wide asked to delay travel until outside of active work hours. If wide loads are unable to delay travel, we ask that notification of upcoming travel is provided so that the work area can be cleared to accommodate oversize movements. More information on the notification process is provided here.

Bridge repair works update - Laura River bridge, Peninsula Developmental Road
(TMR) has provided an update on deck replacement works on Laura River bridge (Shelleys crossing) on Peninsula Developmental Road (Laura – Coen).
TMR advises the second stage of bridge repair works will now be carried out in mid-2023 (instead of January 2023 as previously advised) due to weather conditions and program scheduling.
This project will replace the bridge ply deck and reinstate the asphalt wearing surface that was damaged during flooding. Assistance will be provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
More information will be provided closer to start of construction for the second stage of works, including timeframes and traffic changes while the works are carried out.
Updated roadworks notice: slope stabilisation on Captain Cook Highway, south of Oak Beach
TMR has provided an update on the slope stabilisation works on the Captain Cook Highway south of Oak Beach. TMR advises work will continue at this location from Friday 13 January 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting. Additional works were identified during the stabilisation works in December 2022 which has extended the scope and completion date of the project.
Crews will be onsite Mondays to Saturdays between 6 am and 6 pm. Several intermittent, full closures will be required at times after 9 am to carry out drilling, vegetation removal, and to move machinery. Road users should expect delays of up to twenty minutes during this time and should plan their journey accordingly. The contractor will monitor queuing lengths and allow traffic through as soon as it is safe.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) are in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates due to poor weather will be posted on the VMS.
The project is expected to be completed by early February 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.
