Convoy of trucks deliver critical supplies into FNQ
The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) collaborated with the Queensland Police Service and Transport and Main Roads yesterday to orchestrate a vital resupply operation for the flood-stricken areas of Far North Queensland. The necessity of this operation was underscored by the partial washout of the Ollera Creek Bridge on the Bruce Highway, a key artery for transporting goods in the region.
The response to this crisis exemplified the resilience and efficiency of the road freight industry. The establishment of a temporary structure by the Australian Defence Force and Transport and Main Roads allowed for the movement of a significant convoy of nearly 300 fully loaded trucks across the bridge. This operation may have been the largest freight convoy undertaken in Australia, highlighting the scale and urgency of the situation.
The impact of these efforts was profound. Local communities, particularly in Ingham, received much-needed essential supplies, including food, medical provisions, and other critical items. In a time of despair, when many residents faced the loss of their homes and belongings, the timely delivery of these supplies provided vital support and hope.
As CEO Gary Mahon of the QTA aptly noted, “The road freight industry always delivers in times of natural disasters. Call them to assemble and they are there.” This sentiment reflects the industry’s commitment to serving the community under challenging circumstances.
Currently, efforts are ongoing to reinforce the Ollera Creek Bridge, with road teams working diligently to seal and fully reopen this essential infrastructure. The dedication of the road freight sector, along with the media's role in raising awareness, has been pivotal in spotlighting the critical contribution of road transport during emergencies.
In summary, the events in North Queensland during the 2025 floods underscore the indispensable role of road freight in crisis management, showcasing the industry's ability to mobilise quickly and effectively to support affected communities.
