Road Conditions Update-QLD-FNQ-Gulf Developmental & Kennedy Developmental Road 7/5-4/6/24

TMR is planning the following temporary road closures to allow important surfacing resealing works to be carried out on six single lane bridges:

  • Gulf Developmental Road between Mt. Surprise and Georgetown
  • Kennedy Developmental Road between the Lynd and Hughenden.

These important works will extend the life of the bridges and create a strong long-lasting wearing surface for the safety and comfort of road users.

The single lane bridges will be closed to all traffic between 7.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Speed reductions will be in place outside these hours. Works will be carried out intermittently from Tuesday 7 May 2024 and be completed Tuesday 4 June 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.

As the bridges are single lane, the works cannot be carried out any other way. Work will be carried out concurrently where possible to streamline the process and minimise disruptions to motorists.

The works will involve excavation of the existing bridge surface, followed by the application of a primer to the bridge surface to promote the adhesion of bitumen surfacing.

The primer is a hard-wearing tacky substance that takes several hours to dry. This is then followed by the application of the bitumen surfacing which can take several hours to lay and compact before it becomes trafficable.

Georgetown

Work will start in Georgetown on Sandy Creek Bridge and on the road between George and High Streets. This will require single lane closures and speed reductions between 7.30am and 5pm between 14 May and 4 June 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Gulf Developmental Road

  • Sisters Creek - 7 May to 29 May
  • Sisters Creek Anabranch – 9 May to 30 May
  • McMillan Creek – 10 May to 30 May
  • Charlies Gully – 11 May to 31 May

Kennedy Developmental Road (The Lynd and Hughenden)

  • Hospital Creek – 14 May to 4 June

Work crews will ensure Emergency Services and the Cairns Karumba Bus Service, are provided with access where required.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place to advise motorists about the closures so they can plan their journeys in the following locations:

GDR – Georgetown, Mt. Surprise and Einasleigh

KDR - The Lynd, Hughenden and Einasleigh.

TMR appreciate the patience of residents, business, and road users while the important works are carried out.

These works are being carried out under TMR’s Programmed Maintenance Asphalt Program, with recovery works under the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) being carried out at the same time to minimise disruption for road users.
