'Travel safe' this tax time - Deductions for truck drivers
Information from the ATO
Tax time is right around the corner. Not sure what deductions you can and can’t claim? Well good news, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) have shared a range of tips and resources to help make tax time simple.
Understanding your deductions
It pays to know what you can and can’t claim at tax time. Check out the ATO’s tailored occupation guide for truck drivers. It covers a range of information on common deductions for your role, income and allowances you need to declare, and records you’ll need to keep.
‘So what can I claim?’
You can claim the work-related portion of expenses that relate directly to your employment, as long as you spent the money yourself and have a receipt! This might include:
- Protective equipment – such as sunglasses and sunscreen, where prolonged periods of sun exposure is likely while you’re performing your work duties
- Overnight travel expenses where you sleep away from home overnight, or are required to take your mandatory long rest break.
- Compulsory assessments and medical examinations you require to carry out your current employment duties.
Keeping your records
Keeping records is essential. Download the ATO app and use the myDeductions tool for a fast and easy way to store your receipts and keep track of your records!
The ATO app is also one of the best ways to track the progress and outcome of your tax return after you’ve lodged.
And the best time to lodge?
The best time to lodge is from late July, when most of your information from employers, banks and health funds has been automatically included in your tax return. All you’ll need to do is check the pre-filled information is correct, add any income that’s missing, and claim your deductions!
