Slope stabilisation works on Palmerston Highway and Gillies Range Road
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is about to start slope stabilisation works on the Palmerston Highway, Coorumba near Gordon Creek culvert and the Gillies Range Road between Frog Rock and Huntsbrook Creek bridge.
The works will involve rock bolting, installation of fibrecrete, sheet piling and rock netting to reinforce the slopes. This reduces the risk of rocks falling onto the road surface and mitigates the effects of embankment erosion in these locations.
The works will start on Monday 17 October 2022. Crews will be onsite between 6 am and 6 pm Monday to Saturday. Subject to weather and construction conditions the works will:
- start on the Palmerston Highway and take about seven days to complete.
- then move to the Gillies Range Road
- expected completion in mid-November.
For the safety of workers and road users, there will be changed traffic conditions while the works are carried out. Temporary speed limit reductions and single lane closures will be in place during the day and night (excluding Fridays 4pm-6pm and Sundays) under the control of traffic lights and / or manual traffic controllers.
Several intermittent, full closures will be required at times to carry out drilling, vegetation removal, and to move machinery. Road users should expect delays of up to twenty minutes during this time and should plan their journey accordingly. The contractor will monitor queuing lengths and allow traffic through as soon as it is safe.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates due to poor weather will be posted on the VMS.
