Road Conditions: Update on Temporary HV Restrictions - Bremer River Bridge, Warrego Highway

Update from Department of Transport and Main Roads, Heavy Vehicles Unit

Temporary restrictions regarding left lane closure on the Bremer River Bridge westbound on the Warrego Highway at Karalee will be suspended from 4am Saturday 12 August 2023 and resume from 9pm Monday 21 August 2023.

During this time both westbound lanes will re-open to light traffic with a maximum enforced speed of 60km/h.

Some restrictions to heavy vehicles will continue.

Oversize overmass (OSOM) vehicles
The Bremer River bridge westbound remains closed to all Class 1 OSOM vehicles exceeding 42.5 tonnes travelling under a permit or notice during this time.

TMR is investigating alternate routes for Class 1 heavy vehicles, with most loads being re-routed onto the Cunningham Highway. We will provide further updates early next week.

OSOM operators will need to apply for an alternative route via the NHVR Portal.

Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs)
Access will open to SPVs operating under the National Class 1 Special Purpose Vehicle (up to 40 tonnes total mass) Mass and Dimension Exemption Notice 2021, IAP Category 1 and Category 2 SPVs:

  • between 8pm and 5am only
  • at a reduced speed of 10km/h or less whilst traversing the structure
  • centreline travel with a 50m distance between all other vehicles on the structure
  • pilot vehicle to travel to rear of SPV to manage centre line and reduced speed condition

Heavy vehicles, other than OSOM and SPV vehicles, are required to travel across the Bremer River Bridge westbound in the left lane only, observing reduced speed restrictions.

Extended traffic delays are expected, so we encourage heavy vehicle operators to allow for this when planning your journey.

We will keep you updated with further information early next week.

TMR apologises for the inconvenience and delays experienced, however, safety is our number one priority.

We are continuously monitoring, assessing and reviewing our roads, bridges and culverts across Queensland. Conditions can change quickly, particularly due to weather. Restrictions are implemented to maintain ongoing safety for all road users.

It is your responsibility to make sure you're using up-to-date information when you assess the suitability of your route.

You must check the Conditions of Operation Database before you start your journey.
