Road Conditions Update: NT-Barkly Highway, SINGLE LANE reopening to B-Doubles ONLY from Friday 5/4/2024
The following has been received from NTRTA
BARKLY HIGHWAY – REOPENING TO DOUBLES ONLY – SINGLE LANE ONLY FROM FRIDAY 05/04/2024
The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics has just advised that the Barkly Highway will reopen tomorrow (Friday 5/4/24) with a 13 axle (double road train) limit until the DIPL team are better able to assess the impacts of heavy vehicles on the road.
IMPORTANT - STRICT SPEED LIMITS APPLIES - Please instruct driver to abide by the set limits to preserve the access.
DIRECTIONAL ACCESS FOR 5, 6, 7 APRIL
- Eastbound traffic are permitted to travel ONLY between 6:00am to 9:00am ACST (NT to QLD)
- Westbound traffic are permitted to travel ONLY between 12noon to 3:00pm ACST (QLD to NT).
The directional flow of traffic may change from Monday 8th April. Further updates will be provided.
Note:
NTRTA has advocated very strongly to permit triple road trains on the Barkly Highway with strict speed limits applied. DIPL would not support this request due to the water still over the road and the sections that are still to be repaired. DIPl have indicated that they will review the access for triple road trains daily and are fully aware of the impacts on all transport operators required to break up and shuttle trailers.
The severely degraded sections of the Barkly Highway are:
- 5-7km from Stuart Highway Turnoff on the Barkly Highway
- 32km from Stuart Highway Turnoff on the Barkly Highway
- 50km – 60km section from Stuart Highway Turnoff on the Barkly Highway
Please urge all Drivers to be patient and respectful, to slow down and to drive to the road conditions.
