Road Conditions Qld: Kuranda Range Road Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) testing
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence testing of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) technology that was recently installed on the Kennedy Highway (Kuranda Range Road) on Sunday 20 August 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.
The ITS stations are equipped with roadside data systems and signs that can display variable speed limits. They will complement the existing variable message signs, automatic number plate recognition and Bluetooth systems on and near Kuranda Range Road.
Testing will ensure the ITS technology is working correctly and communicating with the Traffic Management Centre so that informed decisions can be made for the operation of Kuranda Range Road. Testing will be carried out in a staged approach at night between 6 pm and 6 am to minimise impacts on road users. Changed traffic conditions will be in place during the works, including single lane closures and reduced speed limits. Road users should expect minor delays and plan their journeys accordingly.
Worksite signage will be in place during the works advising of the testing. Motorists must follow all signage through the worksite.
The ITS treatments will enable TMR to rapidly detect and manage incidents on Kuranda Range Road. It is expected the treatments will shorten the length of time for road closures and improve trip reliability. When the road is slippery due to wet weather, TMR can remotely adjust the speed limit, making it safer for motorists.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2024, weather and construction conditions permitting.
