Road Conditions: Cunningham's Gap Reconstruction Project

Information from Department of Transport and Main Roads,South Coast Region, Cunningham's Gap Reconstruction Project

TMR South Coast Region have provided an update on the traffic impact for the Cunningham's Gap Reconstruction Project.

Update so far

Stage 1 works, including slope survey activities to identify high-risk areas, commenced in January 2023. The survey work undertaken to date has identified areas of the uphill slope that may require some degree of scaling or stabilisation to reduce the risk of rockfalls.

What's the impact on access over Cunningham's Gap?

To undertake scaling and stabilisation works during Stage 1, for the safety of motorists and workers, intermittent stop/slow traffic changes will be required that may impact your business operations.

Day works

  • From 18 April 2023 from 6am to 6pm, from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), stop/slow traffic conditions will be required for slope stabilisation works behind the safety barriers.
  • Road users may experience delays of up to 45 minutes during this time.
  • Roadside electronic signage (Variable Message Signs, VMS) will be located at key points along the road network to advise motorists of the expected delays.

Night works

  • On 22 April 2023, from 8pm to 4am traffic will be under stop/slow conditions for pavement works.
  • Road users may experience delays of up to 15 minutes when travelling through Cunninghams Gap during this time.

It is important to note that weather or site conditions can impact these work schedules.

What's ahead?

Stage 2 reconstruction works will involve the installation of rockfall protection systems, Gap Creek Bridge works, installation of slope monitoring technology and completing works around the Main Range National Park car park. Stage 2 works are expected to commence in late 2023, subject to weather and site conditions. Due to the complexity of the recovery work and to ensure the safety of the workers and the public, there may be a requirement for occasional short-term, temporary closures of the Cunningham Highway in the future. If short-term closures are required, we will provide advance notice.
