NQ Floods-Safety Update and Support Letter 9/2/25
CEO's Message
I am fully aware that the situation in NQ/FNQ is extremely difficult with all road access currently cut into NQ and FNQ.
We know that on some of these some roads/bridges that when water does recede, this is presenting driver with an opportunity to get through despite road closure signage being in place. In this circumstance, drivers are placing themselves and their truck at risk in an unsafe situation.
Drivers have been reported driving around and/or removing road closure signage creating a procession of trucks driving over unsafe sections of roads or bridges. Due to the amount of water, and the length of time that some of these structures have been submerged, it is critical they are inspected by road managers prior to trucks progressing over them. We know this is frustrating, however, this not only ensure the safety of the drivers and equpiment, but will avoid any further damage to road pavements and culverts. Further damage will hinder repair time and may increase risk of delays or cause single lane road closures in the future.
I understand your frustration and the scenarios that drivers are in, however, I urge you to reinforce the following to operations and drivers:
- Although water may recede on bridges or roads, if signage is still in place, instruct drivers to OBEY this signage. Driving around or removing signage increases risks for other drivers that follow a lead truck.
- In this scenario, encourage the driver to communicate this and it is recommended to call me so we can expediate access and obtain clearance rather than risking driver safety and further road damage.
- Instruct drivers to drive to conditions and be respectful of any safety and speed.
If you are experiencing pressure from customers about freight deliveries, we have prepared a letter of support you can send to customers. This will reiterate the importance of your prioritisation of safety and reinforce your commitment to deliver safely when permitted. Members can access the letter here.
We are in contact with TMR to provide information and communicate the circumstances that fleets are in with truck being parked all around the region. We know that this is placing an inordinant amount of stress on your operation and of course your drivers.
Lisa and I are available at any time to support you, so please call or text - Lisa 0405 152 952 or me 0418 736 802. The information you provide helps us to advocate on your behalf.
Stay safe
Gary
