Have your Say - Logan West Upgrade
Transurban, in partnership with the Queensland Government, is developing plans to upgrade approximately 10km of the Logan Motorway between Formation Street and the Mount Lindesay Highway. The proposed upgrade will ease congestion, boost productivity and improve safety on this key freight corridor.
Why is the project needed?
The Logan Motorway supports over $1 billion in freight each day between key hubs like Toowoomba, Port of Brisbane, Australia TradeCoast and Brisbane Airport
However, congestion on the motorway is getting worse which is impacting productivity and road safety. If nothing is done, average speeds on key sections of the Logan Motorway could drop to just 15 km/h during peak periods by 2031.
The proposed upgrade will address this congestion and reduce travel times by up to 20 minutes during these peak periods, improving safety, reliability, and connectivity for freight.
It will enhance freight productivity by unlocking capacity and improving access for over-dimensional loads.
Key project features
- Travel time savings: Extra capacity in both directions, including one new lane each way between the Centenary Motorway and the Mt Lindesay Highway, plus an extra westbound lane from Boundary Road to Formation Street.
- Additional lanes: Enhance road safety and reduce crash rates
- Formation Street interchange upgrade: Supports growing industrial areas and freight needs.
- Smart motorway technologies: Installation of advanced systems to manage traffic flow, reduce delays and improve safety.
- Increased vehicle height capacity: Modifications to accommodate over-dimensional vehicles.
Expected benefits
- Travel time savings: Reduce travel times by up to 20 minutes during peak periods by 2031
- Safety improvements: Enhance road safety and reduce crash rates
- Local road relief: Remove over 6,100 vehicles from local roads daily, easing congestion and safety issues
- Freight efficiency: Improve travel times and connectivity for freight accessing key economic hubs
- Economic impact: Inject over $1 billion into the economy during construction
- Jobs growth: Around 850 local jobs will be created including a focus on women and First Nations inclusion in the construction industry.
