Cunninghams Gap Reconstruction Project

Information from Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR)

TMR would like to provide you with an update on the Cunninghams Gap Reconstruction Project.

Work is continuing to repair a two-kilometre section of the Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap that was significantly damaged by severe bushfires. There are significant challenges associated with the site due to the unique and complex topography, environmental values, and permanent geotechnical installations required.

In January 2023 slope survey activities commenced to identify high-risk areas. This survey work identified areas of the uphill slope that requires some degree of scaling or stabilisation to reduce the risk of rocks falling and for construction to be undertaken safely. Stabilisation works are underway above the Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap. These stabilisation activities are being undertaken by a crew of rope access technicians that abseil down the steep rock face.

From late 2023, works are expected to commence on rockfall protection systems, installing slope monitoring technology, works to Gap Creek bridge as well as works around the Main Range National Park car park.

TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

On the Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap, intermittent stop/ slow traffic conditions are in place from 6am to 6pmMonday to Friday (excluding public holidays). Road users may experience intermittent delays of up to 15 minutes when travelling through Cunninghams Gap between Tregony and Mount Edwards.

Further traffic changes are likely to be required later in 2023, subject to weather and site conditions. More information will be provided as this work is programmed. While there are no planned closures of the Cunningham Highway, due to the complexity of the recovery work and to ensure the safety of the workers and the public, there may be a requirement for occasional short-term, temporary closures of the Cunningham Highway in the future. If there is a short-term requirement for a closure, advance notice will be provided to the community.
